Kris Stevenson, MFT Intern
SHE/HER
Syracuse University Masters Student in Marriage and Family Therapy
I believe therapy is most helpful when you have a relationship where you feel understood, respected, and able to show up authentically. Before becoming a therapist, I began my career in mental health as a peer support worker, where I learned how meaningful it can be to connect with someone beyond diagnoses or academic language. I later earned my Bachelor of Social Work and continued working with people and families facing challenging circumstances. Those experiences ultimately led me to pursue marriage and family therapy.
I work with individuals, couples, families, and adolescents who want to strengthen their relationships, communicate more effectively, and feel more connected to the people who matter to them. I am especially interested in working with LGBTQIA+ clients, people with disabilities, and people navigating polyamorous relationships and family structures. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community and a person with disabilities myself, I bring lived experience that helps me understand some of the ways identity, accessibility, and relationships can intersect.
My approach is relational, collaborative, and culturally attuned. I am especially drawn to Internal Family Systems (IFS), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Gottman-informed approaches. Rather than assuming there is one right way for a relationship or family to function, I want to understand the relationships you are trying to build and what matters most to the people within them. Together, we can identify patterns that are creating disconnection and work toward clearer communication, greater empathy, increased affection, and more compassion for one another.
I believe healthy relationships within partnerships and families can provide a foundation for healthier communities. My goal is to create a space where you can examine what is and is not working, develop a deeper understanding of yourself and the people around you, and practice new ways of relating that feel more authentic and sustainable.
Outside of therapy, I enjoy vegetable gardening, 3D printing, home improvement projects, and visiting museums of all kinds.
