OUR ORIGINS
From Dr. Jesse Smith Therapy to Waterloo Therapy Group
In 2021, Dr. Jesse Smith, LMFT-AS, started Dr. Jesse Smith Therapy, a private practice specializing in individual, couples, and group therapy, as well as special issues of trauma and addiction recovery.
By 2023, Dr. Smith began expanding the practice with other clinicians. In 2024, the practice opened an in-person office in Center City of Philadelphia. Now, with a team of compassionate Licensed and Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapists, the practice has become Waterloo Therapy Group, proudly serving PA-based individuals, couples, families, and groups on their journeys to healing, growth, and connection.

What if I just need to vent - is that therapy?Venting is normal human behavior but it’s not part of therapy. While client autonomy is extrememly important, therapy isn’t just a place to vent where you want someone to provide feedback or suggestions and guidance. While everyone’s needs are different, therapy is great for tackling hard areas of your life that are hindering you from moving forward and growing as a person.

My last therapist was awful, why should I try it again?Sometimes it takes a while to find the right therapist - it can be a lot of trial and error. That’s why we aim to match you with a therapist that will be good fit for you and your needs. Therapy is different for everyone. We try to strike a balance with my clients where we may push those who are complacent and allow space for people who are too hard on themselves. Your mental health provider should be flexible in their approach and we try to do exactly that with each client.
